Oper der Stadt Köln
The Oper der Stadt Köln is Cologne’s main opera house and the resident company’s architectural home. Architect Wilhelm Riphahn designed the present building for Cologne.
It opened in 1957 within the arts complex at Offenbachplatz, alongside Schauspiel Köln. Riphahn also designed the neighbouring Schauspiel Köln.
Inside, the house combines a modernist setting with opera, recitals, and special events. Jazz pianist Keith Jarrett played here in 1975.
The recording became The Köln Concert, linking this Cologne stage with a recorded solo piano performance. Opera in Cologne reaches back to the eighteenth century.
The city placed its opera company under municipal management in 1904. That history continues through premieres and ambitious productions.
Oper der Stadt Köln has presented works by Weber, Wagner, Korngold, Zemlinsky, Schreker, and Stockhausen. Children’s opera became part of the company in 1996.
It brings fairy-tale, classical, baroque, romantic, and contemporary works to young audiences. Mobile productions also bring opera into kindergartens and daycare centres.
The venue connects Riphahn’s architecture, Cologne’s opera history, and performances designed for families.
