Rock Garden
Rock Garden stands in Chandigarh, India, near Sukhna Lake, as a sculpture garden shaped from discarded materials. Interlinked waterfalls, courtyards and concrete figures create a winding landscape of dancers, musicians and animals.
Nek Chand Saini began building the garden secretly in 1957, using waste from demolition sites and abandoned industrial objects. After authorities discovered it in 1976, the project grew beyond its original twelve-acre complex into a forty-acre site with more than 2,000 sculptures, open-air theatres and pavilions. Bottles, glass bangles, tiles, ceramic pots, sinks, electrical waste and broken pipes all become part of the artwork.
A Dolls Museum adds 200 rag dolls made from waste cloth, while artificial waterfalls connect the garden’s sculptural spaces.
