Monumento a Lenin

Monumento a Lenin stands in the Giardini di Augusto on Capri, surrounded by flowers, greenery and views across the Tyrrhenian Sea. From the gardens, the Faraglioni rock formations and Capri’s rugged coastline create a striking setting for the marble sculpture.

Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzù created the monument after a local council decision in the late 1960s, and the Soviet embassy commissioned it in 1968. Several marble blocks, each about five metres high, support a bust of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, who stayed on Capri during exile in 1908 and between 1908 and 1910. Nearby, Maxim Gorky hosted him, and Lenin joined discussions with Russian exiles while playing chess on a terrace.

The sculpture recalls Capri’s place as a meeting point for political exiles, writers and artists. It remains one of only two Lenin monuments in Italy, alongside the one in Cavriago, and its quiet garden setting contrasts with the debates and occasional damage surrounding it.
