Arco Naturale
Arco Naturale rises above Capri’s eastern coast as a limestone arch, perched on a cliff above the sea. Its semicircular opening frames the distant coastline like a natural window.
Wind and water eroded a larger grotto until this twelve-metre span remained between two stone pillars. The formation dates to the Paleolithic age and stands eighteen metres above the ground, surrounded by myrtle, euphorbia, broom, agave and pine trees. You reach it along the Pizzolungo path, either from Capri’s main square or by the more scenic southeastern route past the Faraglioni, villas and historic buildings. The approach includes steps, level paths and terraces, then climbs about two hundred more steps after the Grotta di Matermania, a former Roman nymphaeum.
From the water, the arch appears as a solitary bridge projecting from the cliff.
