Musée des explorations du monde stands in Cannes, within the remains of a medieval castle on Suquet hill. Medieval walls surround a courtyard, chapel, and square watchtower. Lérins monks began the quadrangular convent in the eleventh century, after settling on Saint-Honorat in the fifth century. Damage later left the castle partly ruined.
A private residence and ceramics factory preceded the city’s 1919 acquisition for museum use. Baron Lycklama donated the founding collection in 1877. Galleries bring together Himalayan and Tibetan masks, Arctic Inuit objects, pre-Columbian ceramics, and Oceanian weapons. Mediterranean rooms hold Sumerian tablets, objects from Persia and Cyprus, and Christian lead sarcophagi. A gold funerary mask from Sidon arrived through a Louvre deposit.
Paintings by Joseph Contini and Adolphe Fioupou trace Provençal landscapes through detailed studies and panoramic views. The Mediterranean garden welcomes you beneath large umbrella pines. Climbing the watchtower leads to a panoramic view across Cannes and its surroundings.
