Murs Peints - Trompe l’œil

Murs Peints - Trompe l’œil turns Cannes into an open-air cinema museum spread across streets, homes, and public buildings. Around fifteen large murals bring French and international film figures into residential districts beyond the Croisette, where painted façades meet railway tracks, schools, and expressways.

The project began in 2002 to celebrate Cannes’ connection with cinema throughout the year. Trompe l’œil techniques make flat walls resemble windows, balconies, and entire rooms, while scenes and portraits honour Guy de Maupassant, Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Robert De Niro. A 133-square-metre mural recalls Taxi Driver, and an 80-square-metre scene from Un Homme et une Femme covers the René Goscinny primary school in La Bocca.

One mural presents Maupassant in a 95-square-metre composition opposite one of his last residences on avenue de Grasse. Another celebrates the technicians and directors working behind the camera, while a separate work symbolises Cannes’ sixteen cinemas.
