Chapelle Saint-Michel
Chapelle Saint-Michel stands on Île Saint-Honorat, one of the Lérins Islands off the coast of Cannes. The island surrounds the fortified Lérins monastery and several chapels shaped by centuries of monastic life. Low foundation stones trace a rectangular nave and a semicircular apse across the ground. Only fragments rise above the surrounding surface today.
The chapel probably dates from around the year one thousand, although its precise age remains uncertain. Two visible pillar bases suggest a triumphal arch once separated the apse from the nave. A stone bench runs along the north wall, linking this small church with early medieval buildings in Hérault. The plain design reflects practical worship rather than elaborate decoration.
Île Saint-Honorat preserves a wider archaeological landscape of Roman, early Christian, and medieval remains. Monks once lived in simple shelters near chapels, then gathered at communal buildings during major religious festivals. An earthquake in 410 lowered parts of the Côte d’Azur, leaving some ancient remains buried or underwater. Here, the surviving bench and pillar bases make the vanished chapel’s shape unusually tangible.
