Margitszigeti Víztorony

Margitszigeti Víztorony rises above the trees on Margaret Island, combining an Art Nouveau silhouette with Budapest’s engineering history. Ray Rezső Vilmos and Dr. Zielinski Szilárd designed the tower, completed in 1911 with pioneering reinforced concrete.

Its tank once held 600 cubic metres of water for the island’s centre. The structure also served as a lookout, with a spiral staircase leading towards a viewing hall and eight balconies. Since 1977, the protected monument has carried a cultural role through summer exhibitions, concerts, and visual projection installations.

You climb 152 steps to reach the panorama at 33 metres above ground. From there, rooftops, bridges, the Danube, and the distant Buda hills spread across the view. The distinctive tower also appears in the city waterworks logo, linking practical infrastructure with artistic imagination.
