Budavári evangélikus templom

Budavári Lutheran Church stands in Budapest’s Castle District with a facade uncommon among Lutheran churches. Massive Corinthian-style columns frame its Baroque-influenced entrance, designed by architect Mór Kallina.

Inaugurated in 1895, the building replaced an earlier church lost when the site became military property. Inside, sunlight filters through stained glass onto a simple barrel vault and a Classicist altar transferred from its predecessor. Székely Bertalan’s altarpiece shows Christ blessing the bread, while a double gallery holds the organ and choir. Wartime destruction in 1944 removed much of the organ and side buildings, followed by restoration in 1948 and new stained-glass windows by Vilmos Schneller in 1995.

A memorial plaque outside honours Pastor Gábor Sztehlo, who protected thousands of children during the Second World War, including children hidden in caverns beneath the parish house. Music remains central here, carried by the organ, choir and the congregation’s Bach Festival tradition.
