Wätjens Schloss
Wätjens Schloss stands in Blumenthal, northern Bremen, between Vegesack and Blumenthal. Its villa rises within Wätjens Park, a protected monument shaped as an English landscape garden.
Diedrich Heinrich Wätjen acquired the land in 1830 for his family’s summer residence. Isaak Altmann designed the surrounding grounds, while architect Heinrich Müller replaced the first country house with an English Tudor Gothic villa between 1858 and 1864. Bremen acquired the park after the Bremer Vulkan bankruptcy in 1997, opening the green grounds as a public space while the villa and other residential buildings remained privately owned.
The villa served as a hospital during the First World War and suffered damage during the Second World War. Its spire and several gables disappeared, and apartments and an artist’s studio now occupy the building.
