Spiegelhof

Spiegelhof is a historic farmhouse in Bremen’s Burglesum district, within the marshland area called Werderland. An inscription dates the building to 1667. Its single-storey timber frame supports a thatched gabled roof, with a southern hip and a round Ulenlock. The southern gable contains the large doorway called the Groten Dör. Inside, the open Flett kitchen includes rare Weser sandstone slabs. Spiegelhof exemplifies the traditional Niedersachsenhaus. A medieval Freihof once stood here, offering fugitives three days of refuge beyond local court interference. The estate later passed through notable Bremen families. Shipbuilder Johann Lange acquired it in the 1840s, and Albrecht Buschmann leased it in 1889. Restoration took place in the early 1980s. The roof was renewed in 2013, and Bremen placed the house under monument protection in 1973. Measuring about 25 metres by 13 metres, Spiegelhof is recognised as Bremen’s oldest Niedersachsenhaus, with 200 square metres of living space and 160 square metres of stable area.
