Speicher I
Speicher I stands at the Europahafen in Bremen’s Überseestadt district, within the Walle area. Seven storeys, red brick, concrete grid patterns, and high window bands give the former warehouse a clearly structured appearance.
Built between 1948 and 1950, the building became Bremen’s first new warehouse after the Second World War. Max Säume and Günther Hafemann designed its prefabricated prestressed-concrete structure, which held sixteen sections, heavy-duty lifts, and loading ramps for trains and lorries. By 2006, large office and commercial lofts had replaced the storage use, while old wooden floors and the spacious layout remained.
Large steel-and-glass elements now bring light into spaces used by shops, offices, service providers, storage businesses, and a restaurant. Bremen declared Speicher I a cultural monument in 2006.
