Schweizerhaus

Schweizerhaus stands in Bremen’s Schwachhausen district, within the Bürgerpark designed by Wilhelm Benque. Its brick walls form one- and two-storey sections beneath a gabled roof. Jacob Carl Scheinpflug designed it in 1872, giving the building a Swiss-style character associated with Historicism. A decorative piece was added to the roof triangle in 1886.

The park director originally lived here, and the park association briefly used rooms for administration until 1884. Heinrich Müller added a rear extension with a staircase in 1884. Hermann Deetjen followed with a two-room side extension in 1889, while the gable plaque carried the founders’ message about civic pride and collective effort. Fifteen hundred gold thalers funded the building, with one third supplied by broker Heinrich Christian Dieckmann. Modernisation in 1989 and 1990 followed an oil-heating installation in 1970, and monument protection has covered the building since 1984.
