Sankt Magni
Sankt Magni is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Bremen’s Burglesum district, within the St. Magnus area. Its complex combines a brick church, community rooms, and a freestanding bell tower. The main building has a rounded gable wall, gabled roofs, and circular skylights set into the roof.
Eberhard Gildemeister’s winning competition design reached completion in 1967. Exposed concrete forms the 34-metre bell tower, while open pergolas partly enclose the courtyard. Hedilor Boehringer-Gildemeister created the baptismal font for the church. The parish began in 1965, first holding services at Villa Tannenhof, which still hosts children’s and youth activities.
The surrounding history reaches back to a chapel on a hill beside the Lesum River, in today’s Knoops Park. Bones found during Villa Schotteck’s construction in 1892 suggest that a cemetery once surrounded it. An old bell from that chapel now hangs in a church tower in Bremen-Horn.
