Remberti-Kontorhaus

The Remberti-Kontorhaus stands on Rembertistraße in Bremen as an early twentieth-century architectural landmark. Behrens & Neumark designed its combination of homes, offices, and commercial spaces. Construction began after an old private house gave way to the new project in 1911. An initial building permit had already been granted in 1910. The location sits within Bremen’s historic urban setting, where residential and professional uses share one building.

The First World War interrupted construction before completion, leaving the project partly finished in 1918. The design then changed to fit smaller apartments and more units on each floor. By 1921, the completed building combined private residences with offices. In 1932, tenants included the Landesfinanzamt alongside private apartments. A fire damaged the attic during the Second World War. By 1956, offices occupied most of the building. The American consulate and a doctor’s office once stood among its early occupants.
