Postamt 5
Postamt 5 stands near Bremen’s main railway station as a monumental former postal building. Completed in 1926, it once ranked among the city’s largest structures and served as the central building of the Oberpostdirektion Hannover.
The site began with a land purchase in 1915, while the First World War delayed construction. An architectural competition followed in 1922, and Rudolf Jacobs’s second-place design ultimately shaped the building, with Richard Kuöhl creating the coat of arms above the entrance. During its working life, the complex housed a central field post office, a mail sorting centre and, later, a parcel centre with rail connections. After abandonment in 1996, new uses arrived, including a supermarket, hostel, dance studios, architecture office, fitness centre and restaurant.
The protected façade preserves that postal history while the interior supports varied daily activity. The adjacent rail hall, built in the late 1980s and closed in 1996, is planned for conversion into 300 student apartments.
