Pförtnerhaus

Pförtnerhaus stands in St. Magnus, Bremen-Burglesum, within the historic setting of Knoops Park. This Neo-Gothic gatehouse belongs to Bremen’s architectural heritage. Its two storeys, flat-gabled roof, and corner finials create a distinctive silhouette beside the park’s garden paths.

Gustav Runge designed it for the Schloss Mühlenthal estate, built for industrialist Ludwig Knoop. Wilhelm Benque planned the surrounding garden. The estate reached completion in 1871, linking the building to Bremen’s industrial history. After Schloss Mühlenthal was demolished in 1933, the Pförtnerhaus and Gärtnerhaus remained as the estate’s only surviving structures. Bremen’s monument preservation laws have protected it since 1973.

Residential use now occupies the preserved building within the historic ensemble. Its corner finials still punctuate the roofline beside Benque’s landscaped garden.
