Molenturm

The Molenturm stands in Bremen’s harbor area, a twelve-metre lighthouse built from evenly cut grey-brown Porta sandstone blocks. Two galleries frame an oriel, while a green lantern house rises beneath its copper roof. Beside the mole, the small tower gives the waterfront a distinct maritime landmark.

Built in 1906, the lighthouse originally worked with a beacon on Shipyard Island to guide vessels into the Überseehafen. Harbor infilling during the 1990s ended that guiding role. Green light still shines from the lantern house, visible across nine nautical miles. In 2000, the tower and its section of mole became listed monuments.

Clearing improved the path in 2007, and reinforcement by 2019 strengthened access across the mole. The route leads walkers and cyclists towards Waller Sand, a park area at Überseestadt’s edge. At the water, sandstone, copper, and green light keep the old harbor story in view.
