Jugendfreizeitheim Farge
Jugendfreizeitheim Farge stands in Rekum, part of Bremen-Blumenthal, beside the eastern high bank of the Weser. The single-storey brick building measures 53.7 metres long, 10 metres wide and 9.4 metres high. Its thatched gable roof has dormer windows, while a central gable entrance faces the surrounding landscape.
Built in 1939, the building follows Eduard Scotland’s conservative Heimatstil and has protected monument status since 1986. Plans began in 1937 for a youth hostel on a 20-metre cliff overlooking the Weser and Oldenburg’s flatlands. A small harbour has occupied the foot of the cliff since around 1924. War delayed the interior work, and anti-aircraft soldiers used the building between about 1941 and 1945. After residential use, the site became a municipal youth and sports centre around 1960, and Caritas now operates activities for young people.
The sports-field area reveals an older layer of the place. Construction work in 2024 uncovered relics dating from 900 to 700 BC, evidence of prehistoric settlement along this stretch of the Weser.
