Alt-Aumunder Kirche
Alt-Aumunder Kirche stands in Bremen-Vegesack’s Aumund district as a neo-Gothic church of red brick. Construction followed Ludwig Wege’s designs between 1876 and 1877. Slender wooden supports divide the hall into three naves, each arranged in six bays. At the eastern end, a round choir balances the long interior.
A square west tower rises above the brick walls, carrying an octagonal copper-covered spire. Four clocks sit between the spire’s small corner turrets. Christ appears enthroned beneath the triumphal arch, flanked by angels, Moses, and Paul. Hanoverian painter Karl Bohlmann created the choir-vault ornament between 1909 and 1910. Painter Hermann Oetken covered those paintings in 1952, before Matthias Seefried uncovered and retouched them. That restoration received the Bremen Monument Preservation Prize in 2010.
Nearby, the Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery Alt-Aumund adds a small chapel for up to one hundred mourners. The parish community also supports a kindergarten, adult and brass choirs, and discussion groups.
