St. Franziskus

St. Franziskus is a Catholic chapel in Oberried, part of Breitenthal in Bavaria’s Swabian district. The chapel stands at Tafertshofer Straße 8 in Oberried. Built in 1764, the protected historic monument combines a rectangular two-axis plan with a recessed semicircular apse. A tall ridge turret marks the chapel’s distinctive roofline. In 1866, the building was remodelled in the Neogothic style, changing its architectural appearance. Neogothic details shape the chapel’s exterior silhouette.

Inside, a Baroque altar creates the main focus, with a Madonna and Child sculpture surrounded by saints. The Baroque altar dominates the chapel interior. A large eighteenth-century crucifix hangs between the windows on the left side wall, bringing another historic object into view. Saint Francis appears on the opposite wall. The painting bears J. Waizenegger’s mark and dates from 1852, linking the chapel’s name with its interior imagery. Together, these works connect the chapel’s architecture with Catholic devotional imagery.
