Mariann

Mariann is a wooden shipwreck in the Wadden Sea, lying near Braderup on the island of Sylt. Its wooden remains become visible during low tide.

The vessel began as a schooner before Sylt residents imagined a new life for it. They planned to make it a floating café. Those residents towed Mariann to Munkmarsch harbour, but the necessary permits prevented the café from opening. The proposed café at the harbour therefore remained unrealised.

Mariann was then anchored northwards between Munkmarsch and Braderup, where its owners considered a cabaret venue. A necessary pier never received the required permission. Without that pier, the vessel became an unofficial party ship, hosting celebrations before a mysterious fire. The fire left Mariann in its present state.

These remains record a chain of changing plans, from café to cabaret and finally to shipwreck. Low tide reveals parts of the wooden structure. The site places Mariann beside Braderup’s coast, with Munkmarsch and the Wadden Sea forming its setting.
