Braderuper Heide/Sylt
Braderuper Heide/Sylt is a protected nature reserve on Sylt, between Kampen and Wenningstedt-Braderup. It lies in Schleswig-Holstein’s North Frisian district. Across 137 hectares, dunes, heathland, and northern salt marshes form a coastal landscape within Sylt’s protected natural areas. To the south, the White Cliff rises fifteen metres above the dunes.
The area became a nature reserve in 1987 and belongs to the Dunes and Heathland Landscapes of North and Central Sylt. It also forms part of an EU bird protection area. After the original forests were cleared, broom heather, bell heather, and crowberry established the heath. Sheep grazing, mowing, and controlled burning prevent the heath plants from becoming over-aged.
These measures support the balance between heath plants, dunes, and salt marsh habitats used by many bird species. The southern cliff reaches fifteen metres above the heath.
