Peter-Mayr-Denkmal
The Peter-Mayr-Denkmal stands in Bolzano as a monument to Peter Mayr, a commander in Tyrolean history. Georg von Hauberrisser designed the monument, which was inaugurated in 1900. Its location originally marked Mayr’s forgotten grave, linking the stone directly with his memory.
Peter Mayr fought French domination during the Napoleonic Wars and defended Tyrolean freedom. French forces executed him in 1810 after he refused to renounce his convictions. Inscriptions also commemorate fellow fighters executed by the French in 1809. Bombing during the Second World War damaged the structure, and the Bolzano Homeland Protection Association later restored it. The monument was reconsecrated in 1960, without its neo-Gothic top.
In 2009, the Schützenkompanie Bozen pursued restoration towards the original form for the bicentenary of Mayr’s death. His steadfast refusal to save himself through deceit remains the detail that gives this memorial its lasting force.
