Wilhelm von Humboldt

Wilhelm von Humboldt stands in Berlin near the main building of Humboldt University on Unter den Linden. Paul Otto created this marble statue in 1882, using the detailed, expressive forms of the Berlin school of sculpture.

The neo-baroque design gives the memorial an ornate presence and a sense of permanence. Humboldt was a Prussian scholar, diplomat and reformer who helped found Humboldt University and shaped education in Prussia. His work also extended to linguistics and philosophy, where he connected language with culture and individuality.

Look closely at the marble: its formal dignity suits a thinker whose ideas supported holistic education, independent thought and personal development.
