Mauerrest
Mauerrest stands in a forest area of Pankow, Berlin, as an eighty-metre section of the Berlin Wall. Trees surround the surviving barrier, placing Cold War history within a landscape far from the city’s familiar concrete memorials.
The section belongs to the wall’s first construction phase, which began on 13 August 1961. Barbed wire and alarm wires formed part of this original barrier system before the better-known concrete wall appeared. A local historian discovered the structure in January 2018, eighteen years after first finding it, because it had remained hidden for decades after being mistakenly recorded as dismantled. The protected monument offers a rare view of Berlin’s earliest border construction.
