Haus 1

Haus 1 stands in Berlin as a repurposed office building and a prominent entrance to Atelier Gardens. Built in the 1990s, it now carries a bright yellow exterior visible from the nearby Tempelhofer Feld. MVRDV and Hirschmüller Schindele Architekten reshaped the building for flexible workspaces, a café, and meeting areas. A zigzagging yellow staircase leads upward to the rooftop pavilion and terrace.

The rooftop combines native plants with a living surface and a system that retains rainwater. Inside, LED lighting, water-saving fixtures, bio-based materials, and sustainable timber support the environmental approach. Rainwater supplies flushing and landscape care, while new trees and plants create space for local wildlife. From the yellow staircase to the planted roof, the building connects everyday work with Atelier Gardens’ focus on climate activism and social justice.
