BlackBox Kalter Krieg

BlackBox Kalter Krieg stands a few metres from historic Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin. Its flat, black, box-shaped walls carry light-grey multilingual phrases including “Cold War”, “Espionage”, “Peace” and “Democracy”. The stark exterior leads into a museum about the Cold War, when Eastern and Western blocs faced prolonged geopolitical tension. The building is wheelchair-accessible.

Inside, historical film excerpts, witness interviews and original objects trace the period from 1945 to 1990. Sixteen media stations bring personal experiences into view alongside the political history. A Soviet T-62 tank model, a radiation dosimeter and a Soviet photo gun show how nuclear danger and military reconnaissance shaped daily reality. Stories of ordinary people accompany the larger events, while the nearby Berlin Wall Museum adds escape attempts and the Wall’s effects on Berliners. The dark walls outside leave four words especially clear: “Cold War”, “Espionage”, “Peace” and “Democracy”.
