Altes Museum

Altes Museum stands on Museum Island in Berlin, where neoclassical architecture meets the open setting of the Lustgarten. Its grand portico faces the garden across the surrounding square. Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed the building for King Frederick William III of Prussia, who wanted a public home for the royal art collection. Construction took place between 1825 and 1830, creating an early public space for art and education.

The Antikensammlung fills its rooms with Greek and Roman sculptures and artefacts, connecting the interior to classical antiquity. A columned hall gives the façade a formal presence. The building suffered damage during World War II and underwent restoration from the 1950s onward. Its role then continued as a public cultural institution rather than a royal collection. Wheelchair accessibility adds a practical detail to this historic setting.
