Vila Mbretërore e Durrësit

The Vila Mbretërore e Durrësit is a hilltop villa that connects Albania’s monarchy with the architectural history of Durrës. King Zog used it as a summer residence. Construction began in 1926 and ended in 1937, shortly before his marriage to Queen Géraldine Apponyi de Nagyappony. Architect Kristo Sotiri designed its first phase. Durrës’s business community presented the building to the king as a sign of prosperity. The architect had studied in Padua and Venice. The villa takes the shape of an eagle, Albania’s national symbol, and rises about 98 metres above sea level. The hill overlooks the sea and city.

After the Second World War, the building became a government reception villa for political and international guests. Nikita Khrushchev visited during Albania’s communist era. Its twentieth-century story also includes wartime occupation, presidential use, and a return to private ownership after a legal process. The unrest in Albania damaged the interior in 1997. Historical photographs often place the eagle-shaped villa above Durrës, linking its silhouette with the city’s changing landscape. Plans for villa restoration remain part of public discussion. Architecture and history meet at this elevated landmark, where royal residence, government reception, and national symbolism share one building. Vila Mbretërore e Durrësit preserves a visible chapter of Albania’s political past.
