Kalaja e Ishmit
Kalaja e Ishmit is an Ottoman castle on a hill above the Ishëm River in Albania. Its rectangular fortification served control and defence during peasant uprisings.
From the hill, the castle overlooks the Ishëm plateau, Krujë and Dajt mountains, and the Adriatic coast. The river delta and Cape of Rodon widen the western view.
Albania recognises Kalaja e Ishmit as a first-category cultural monument with historical and cultural value. The walls and entrance changed through weather, settlement, and damage from the 2019 earthquake.
Restoration addressed the fortification walls and stabilised the ground inside the castle. Ibrahim Kodra’s grave stands directly before the main entrance.
The Albanian painter’s resting place connects the castle with local memory and the surrounding cultural landscape. Nearby Gjuricaj preserves a late antique basilica, while old tower houses mark the area.
Columns and capitals from the basilica are held in museums in Durrës and Tirana. Kalaja e Ishmit brings Ottoman military history, local heritage, and broad Albanian landscapes together.
