Casa dels Lleons
Casa dels Lleons stands in Barcelona’s Parc de la Ciutadella, with a neomudéjar façade shaped by Moorish architectural influences. Its exposed brick alternates between two shades. Large horseshoe arches lead the eye upward towards latticework and an overhanging parapet, while red-brick corner towers carry Barcelona’s coat of arms, spherical lightning rods, and green-glazed ceramic tiles.
Pere Falqués i Urpí designed the building in 1894 for the zoo’s large felines, especially lions. It began as an exhibition hall with animal cages. In 1924, the interior changed into the administrative headquarters of Barcelona Zoo. The original side and rear features mostly disappeared, although older photographs show lighter semicircular towers with battlements and windows.
Today, the preserved main façade keeps the strongest signs of its historicist architecture. Local heritage protection safeguards its brickwork, arches, tiles, and civic emblems. Look closely at the tower tops, where green ceramic surfaces meet metal lightning rods.
