Uma Devi Shrine
Uma Devi Shrine stands in the heart of Bangkok as a Hindu temple shaped by South Indian architecture. Its colourful facade carries intricate sculptures of Hindu deities. At the entrance, a tall gopura tower creates a vivid first view of the Tamil Hindu community’s place of worship.
Vaithi Padayatchi, a Tamil Hindu immigrant, established the shrine in 1879 to preserve his cultural and religious heritage. Uma Devi receives devotion here as the goddess of love and dedication to Shiva. Singles come seeking blessings for love and stable relationships, while visitors of every faith encounter Bangkok’s layered spiritual culture.
Inside, a gilded copper dome covers the main shrine and catches the light above the worship space. Stalls within the complex offer flowers, garlands, coconuts and incense for rituals led by Brahmin priests. Navratri and Deepavali bring decorations and special ceremonies that connect worship with the surrounding Tamil Hindu heritage.
