ป้อมวิไชยประสิทธิ์
Pom Wichai Prasit stands in Bangkok on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River. This fort began during the Ayutthaya period, when Bangkok served as an Ayutthaya outpost.
After Ayutthaya fell in 1767, King Taksin made Bangkok his capital and incorporated the reinforced fort into Thonburi Royal Palace. Rattanakosin replaced Thonburi as the capital in 1782. In 1903, the site became home to the Royal Thai Naval Academy, which remained there until 1946. It later became Royal Thai Navy headquarters and remains in military use.
Thick walls and bastions preserve defensive features associated with Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin fortifications. A gaff-rigged flagpole has flown the naval ensign since 1971. Since 1979, ceremonial gun salutes have taken place here, after Memorial Bridge blocked warships from sailing upriver. Bangkok’s oldest remaining fort still carries both its military and riverfront ceremonial role.
