The spot named ศุลกสถาน, also known as Customs House, stands on Bangkok’s eastern Chao Phraya River bank in Bang Rak District.
Joachim Grassi designed the building.
Completed in 1888 during King Chulalongkorn’s reign, the structure presents a neo-Palladian design associated with Siam’s adoption of Western architectural forms.
Customs operations once occupied the site.
The site served as a customs office before later changes altered its role.
The office moved to Khlong Toei Port in 1949.
Later, the former building housed the Marine Police Division and Bang Rak Fire Station staff before falling into disrepair.
Restoration plans connect the structure with a luxury hotel project.
The project aims to retain original architectural features while adding guestrooms, a spa, and a Michelin-starred restaurant.
The riverfront setting remains part of its identity.
