อาสนวิหารอัสสัมชัญ

The Assumption Cathedral, called อาสนวิหารอัสสัมชัญ in Thai, stands in Bangkok as Thailand’s principal Roman Catholic church. It serves as the main church of the Archdiocese of Bangkok.

A French missionary, Father Pascal, requested the original construction in 1821 during King Rama II’s reign. The cathedral honours the Virgin Mary through its connection with the Feast of the Assumption on 15 August. Its Romanesque rebuilding between 1910 and 1918 created a tall rectangular form with a red brick exterior. Ornate decoration and stained glass fill the cathedral beneath its high ceiling.

The complex includes Assumption Convent School, the Catholic Mission of Bangkok, and facilities linked to missionary work. Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral in 1984. Pope Francis also visited the cathedral in 2019, following Pope John Paul II’s visit in 1984. Allied bombing damaged the building during World War II, and later restoration repaired the cathedral. The crypt beneath the sanctuary holds bishops’ and missionaries’ remains, including Father Nicholas Boonkerd Kitbamrung. The cathedral continues Catholic worship and ceremonies, including ordinations. Its red brick façade, stained glass, and crypt connect Bangkok architecture with Catholic history.
