Kapelle Güterstein
Kapelle Güterstein stands above the Gütersteiner Waterfalls near Bad Urach, in Baden-Württemberg’s Swabian Jura. Terraced cascades and lush vegetation surround the quiet chapel. The upper level of the waterfalls places this small building within the Swabian Alb Geopark, where several hiking paths cross the landscape.
A former monastery occupied this site from around 1200 to 1560, with two churches, a dormitory, a refectory, storage buildings, and living quarters. The chapel preserves a replica of an altar from that monastery. Paths connect the site with the Fohlenhof and Rutschenfelsen, offering routes for casual walkers and experienced hikers. Their varied difficulty lets the surrounding woodland and rock formations become part of the visit.
Eduard Mörike’s poem “Septembermorgen” appears on the chapel’s exterior wall. That inscription joins literary history with the waterfall terraces, monastery remains, and quiet setting.
