Hessingburg
Hessingburg stands within the Hessing Clinic grounds in Augsburg-Göggingen, presenting a castle-like silhouette beside the surrounding park. Its three-storey façade gathers towers, turrets and battlements around an unusual plan with a blunt angle.
Karl Albert Gollwitzer completed the building in 1880 for Friedrich von Hessing’s orthopaedic healing institute. The Rothenburg style combines Romantic, Gothic, Renaissance and Neo-Baroque elements across the towers and decorations. A grotto occupies the ground floor, while a fountain represents a source of healing. The park-facing side carries the richest detailing, whereas the rear remains noticeably plainer.
The former guesthouse welcomed prominent visitors, including Empress Auguste Viktoria, and supported the clinic’s public standing. Inside, a garden hall continues to host concerts and other gatherings. Look up to the battlemented terrace, where a former arcade once connected a ramp with a roof structure that has disappeared.
