Dominikanerkloster Heilig-Kreuz
Dominikanerkloster Heilig-Kreuz stands in Augsburg, Bavaria, within the Diocese of Augsburg, and includes two Holy Cross churches. The grounds bring together Catholic and Protestant buildings, showing how Augsburg’s religious landscape changed over centuries. Today, the former monastery complex presents layered architecture, including a three-storey Baroque convent wing built between 1683 and 1687.
The site began as a hospice and moved from Perlachberg to Augsburg in 1143 under Bishop Walter I. A pilgrimage to the Bluthostie, known as the “Wunderbarliches Gut,” began in 1199. Augustinian canons built the collegiate church between 1492 and 1508, while the Ottmarskapelle became the Protestant Holy Cross Church after 1525. The complex later served as a barracks after secularization, then housed a building trade school between 1894 and 1925.
Air raids in February 1944 destroyed the Catholic church’s roof, vaults, and almost all its interior. The Prälatenbau facade returned by 1956, integrated into a theatre magazine building. A golden cross on a blue background survives as the distinctive coat of arms associated with Heilig Kreuz.
