Brechthaus
Brechthaus stands in Augsburg’s old Lechviertel, surrounded by two Lech canals and simple craftsmen’s buildings. This early eighteenth-century house is Bertolt Brecht’s birthplace and now serves as a museum and memorial. Brecht was born upstairs on 10 February 1898.
The permanent exhibition follows his life from Augsburg childhood through Berlin, exile, and his return to Germany. Two floors combine first editions, stage designs, documentary images, and masks from Brecht’s life and theatre. A reading lounge offers his works, while documentary films place his writing within its time. The museum opened in 1985 after the city acquired and renovated the house.
The preserved bedroom of Brecht’s mother, Sophie, gives the visit an especially personal detail. Outside, a bright red stele and a memorial plaque mark the facade as his birthplace.
