Sint-Lambertuskerk

Sint-Lambertuskerk stands in Ekeren, a district of Antwerp, as a brick church on a sandstone base. Its west tower rises above a three-aisled nave, while pointed windows and a slender spire shape the view.

A church stood here by the tenth century, when Count Ansfried reportedly founded the first building. Written records mention it in 1251, and its dedication to Saint Lambertus reflects Ekeren’s former connection with the diocese of Liège. Fires, rebuilding and defence shaped the structure: flames damaged it in 1492, an earthen rampart surrounded it from 1623 to 1648, and a major fire in 1683 destroyed almost everything except the tower masonry. The nave followed in 1696, with its roof completed in 1697, while the transept developed between 1687 and 1698.

The square white-sandstone tower has five sections, pointed bell openings and corner buttresses. Inside the architectural plan, a three-bay choir ends in five sides, and the preserved Plantin-Moretus family crypt connects the church with Antwerp’s historic printing family.
