Olympisch Stadion

Olympisch Stadion stands in Antwerp, Belgium, as a football ground shaped by the city’s Olympic history. Four separate stands surround the pitch, replacing the original athletics bowl.

Construction began in July 1919 for the 1920 Summer Olympics, which opened here on 23 May 1920. Athletics, football, gymnastics, hockey, rugby, and tug of war all took place here. The original bowl held about 30,000 spectators, including 20,000 standing places. After the Games, the venue became a football ground and gradually lost parts of its former scale. A major redevelopment began in 2000, removing the athletics track and creating a football-specific layout with around 12,700 seats.

K Beerschot VA plays its home matches here, while the nickname ‘t Kiel recalls the surrounding Antwerp neighbourhood. A match between Germinal Beerschot and Anderlecht drew 13,769 spectators in November 2007. Today’s four-stand stadium offers no visible trace of the Olympic track, but its sporting life still connects Antwerp’s football supporters with the 1920 Games.
