Molen van Sint-Anneke
Molen van Sint-Anneke stands on Antwerp’s Linkeroever, beside Sint-Annastrand, with its wooden body raised above a former restaurant. This wind-powered grain mill turns its whole structure towards the wind as a traditional Flemish post mill. Its closed base supports two pairs of millstones, while welded sails stretch twenty-four metres across the sky.
Constructed after 1775 in Kwaadmechelen, Limburg, the mill reached Antwerp in 1937 during construction of the Albert Canal. The move preserved the structure, which was rebuilt above the restaurant but remained inactive for decades. A 1990 storm caused severe damage, and a 1996 fire destroyed stored parts before reconstruction began in 2001. Restoration in 2008 returned the machinery to working order for traditional grain milling.
The protected monument still shows the changes made by craftsmen, including a platform balustrade added for safety. Its history remains visible in the unusual journey from Limburg to Antwerp, ending beside the riverfront beach.
