Loodswezen
Loodswezen stands on Antwerp’s right bank of the Scheldt, just upstream from the Bonaparte Lock. Its almost square plan and symmetrical neo-Gothic façade give the building a clear presence between the old city centre and the harbour.
Hendrik Kennes and Ferdinand Truyman designed this eclectic building, constructed between 1892 and 1895. Maritime services once guided ships into Antwerp’s busy port from these offices. Until 2016, the Maritime Inspectorate, Pilotage, Fleet and Maritime Scheldt services worked here. Since 2018, the ground floor has hosted temporary exhibitions beside the redeveloped quays of ’t Eilandje.
Planned changes would add a restaurant overlooking the Scheldt, a chefs’ cooking laboratory and a microbrewery. A community garden beside the building would bring residents, chefs and farmers together to grow fruit and vegetables. The nearby docks, built under Napoleon’s orders, connect this landmark to Antwerp’s rise as a major European port.

The myTuur app is free, and once you are standing at a spot its story starts by itself.
Spots like this one are the stops myTuur strings into tours through Antwerp. In the app, each story begins where you stand: walk up to a spot and it starts, read it on screen or listen as you go, then follow the route to the next one.
What is myTuur?
myTuur is a free city-guide app. Its tours are built from spots, and each spot carries a story that starts when you get there, to read or to listen to as you like.
