Kapel van den Hagelberg
Kapel van den Hagelberg stands in Berendrecht, a district of Antwerp, surrounded by a small park and procession grounds. Its pointed arches and vertical details reflect the 1925 neogothic expansion. A small roof turret, added in 1982, gives the chapel a distinctive outline.
A pillar chapel with a statue of Mary first stood here in 1732. Two years later, builders enclosed it with a walk-in chapel, creating space for prayer and pilgrimage. The procession park, established in 1906, presents the fifteen mysteries of the rosary through religious imagery. A Lourdes grotto, a Sacred Heart statue, and a Saint Theresa statue joined the grounds in 1927. Since 1747, the Berendrechtse Beganktenis has brought pilgrims from Ossendrecht on foot after a plague epidemic.
Inside, an eighteenth-century crucifix and a polychrome Jesus in the tomb preserve the chapel’s early devotional character. The Madonna and Child from 1732 connects the interior directly with the first Marian shrine. Around the building, greenery and statues create space for quiet reflection and communal religious traditions.
