Envelope

Envelope is a bronze sculpture by British artist Tony Cragg, held in Antwerp’s Middelheimmuseum collection. The work dates from 1996 and belongs to the museum’s permanent collection. Its curved, polished surface presents an organic form that changes as you move around it. Perforations puncture the bronze shell across its curved surface. The hollow interior connects the enclosed space with light, air, and the surrounding landscape. Its name reflects the sculpture’s enclosing form and hollow interior.

Envelope measures 238 centimetres in length and 150 centimetres in diameter, giving the work a substantial presence. Bronze casting gives the surface its distinctive sheen. At Middelheimmuseum, the sculpture stands within a park that brings modern and contemporary works into the landscape. The setting places Cragg’s work among Belgian and international artists. The museum was founded in 1950 and includes exhibition pavilions, a flower garden, and an orchard. Envelope remains part of that varied sculptural setting.
