Cartoon's
Cartoon's is a city cinema on Antwerp’s Kaasstraat, housed in a former chocolate factory dating from the late nineteenth century. Three screening rooms occupy the building today for film audiences. Its rooms carry a varied programme of documentaries, feature films, modern classics, family films, and unconventional genre cinema. The basement café Sous Sol gives visitors a place for film conversations.
Founded in 1978 by Guy Dandelooy, Michel Apers, Jan Jespers, and Eric Kloeck, the cinema grew from a smaller venue inspired by Monty. Its first screening was Pourquoi Pas! by Coline Serreau. Before films reached the screens, the building served as a dock warehouse, print works, and private club. Ownership changed after financial trouble, and the Lumière Group with Wild Bunch restored the cinema after its 2013 bankruptcy.
Films such as Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain and La meglio gioventù ran for more than a year. Festivals have also brought Spanish-language films, family screenings, and activities for young visitors to this Antwerp cinema.
