Zuidplein

Zuidplein is a pedestrian square in Amsterdam-Zuid, directly outside Amsterdam Zuid station within the Zuidas business district. The space lies between the station and Strawinskylaan, with the World Trade Center and Atrium surrounding it. Trains, metro services, trams, and city and regional buses converge around this busy urban forecourt. Commuters cross between platforms, offices, shops, and cafés throughout the surrounding business quarter.

H.P. Berlage first planned the square in 1917 as a grand forecourt for Amsterdam’s southern station. The low-lying space opened in 1978 alongside the railway connection to Schiphol. Tram line 5 once turned here, while a bus station served urban and regional routes. After the tram loop closed in 1990, construction for the World Trade Center reshaped both sides. The remaining area became an official pedestrian square after the bus station moved to Strawinskylaan.

The World Trade Center houses offices, restaurants, coffee bars, shops, and practical services beside the square. Amsterdam Zuid station adds more shops, eateries, and a post office for people passing through. Beneath your feet, a large free bicycle facility gives the transport hub one useful hidden feature. Around you, offices, housing, and leisure spaces show how intensely the Zuidas combines work and daily life.
