Paviljoen 1 stands in Amsterdam Oud-West, within the WG Terrein’s former Wilhelmina Gasthuis hospital grounds. The surrounding site combines homes, studios, small businesses, and green communal spaces.
Local activism saved the hospital pavilions from demolition and helped turn them into places for living and working. Residents and users now manage the buildings, bringing individuals, social organisations, artists, and start-ups together. WG Kunst occupies space here, linking the pavilion to exhibitions, open studios, workshops, and neighbourhood events. The community also works on connecting the buildings to a local, affordable, sustainable heating network.
This former hospital building belongs to a green oasis where creative work happens alongside everyday life. Exhibitions in WG Kunst can open the working spaces to visitors, revealing art within a lived-in community.
