7 poorten is a public sculpture in Amsterdam-Noord, designed by Margit Lukács and Persijn Broersen. It stands beside Noorderpark metro station in Amsterdam-Noord. The work arranges brick and concrete gates in a sequence that suggests construction, decay or passage. Two shades of brick define the sculptural structure. Crystal-shaped concrete elements, sedum planting and lighting add distinct details around the gates. At night, lighting changes the sculpture’s presence. Amsterdam School architecture informs the dark brickwork and light keystones, while Minecraft supplies a digital source of inspiration. Local workers’ housing also shapes the design. The central gate visually recalls the city gate at Amsterdam Central Station, creating a link towards Amsterdam’s centre. Metro passengers, cyclists, drivers and pedestrians see the sculpture from the surrounding open space. Its iron skeleton was built alongside the station, allowing adjustments during construction. The artists present the gates as a border between worlds. The sculpture connects Amsterdam-Noord’s industrial history with its changing creative and residential character. Traditional masonry and digital forms meet here beside the metro line, where the neighbourhood’s past and transformation remain visible.
